  • Stephanie Bentum established Krafthaus in 1996, her choice of name inspired by the 1930’s German Bauhaus movement, which combined crafts and the fine arts with industry. Krafthaus collaborates with a selected team of creatives and manufacturers, combining design with industry.

Since 2009, Krafthaus Textiles and Products has been marrying form and function to produce both home and fashion accessories that are functional while at the same time pleasing the senses with colour, shape and texture.

The handmade products, created from felted South African Merino wool, reflect Stephanie’s commitment to an environmentally sustainable lifestyle, along with her desire to develop textiles based on innovation and experimentation in design. She is constantly exploring felt and its uses with the assistance of a small team of local felters. She employs two Xhosa men on a permanent basis. Manipulating this versatile fibre opens up endless possibilities which she embraces. The current range combines the use of Kid Mohair with lambswool resluting in an iridescent sheen and crinkle texture.

Stephanie plays an active role in modern design culture, contributing towards shaping the future of wool by making unique luxurious and bespoke products with a low carbon footprint. This approach characterises the Krafthaus design ethos of innovation coupled with simplicity.

The Krafthaus palette ranges from the understated natural colour of wool to a large range of earthy shades and exuberant colours using environmentally safe imported German dyes. The current exploration of sustainable natural dyes is an ongoing process to create a range of colours which can be both colourfast and repetitive. Custom colours and designs are available on request.
