  • About

Sometimes writing music and lyrics aren’t enough for the soul to bleed. But just sometimes. Most of the times it is, and this is it.
No Syntax is the stage-name for Jan-Daniël de Villiers. Raised on piano lessons and early 90’s mainstream pop, JD discovered a handful of alternative bands by chance shortly after learning classical and fingerstyle guitar, and started learning these new songs by ear. When JD started writing his own songs, he chose t.W.i.M.c (to whom it may concern) as his signature. A self-proclaimed nerd, JD later met an old school acquaintance Steve (not a nerd) and started an Afrikaans band Ekwanders. They roped in Steve’s mate Rudi on saxophone and produce an alternative to Afrikaans alternative music, blending styles as diverse as ska, jazz and metal, among many others. JD and Steve also recently joined the back-up group for country musician Dan Valley, thus forming Dan Valley and the Countrymen. t.W.i.M.c has evolved into No Syntax – a name that JD feels still carries the essence of his original idea for his acoustic solo songs. His style is not the usual singer-songwriter cliché that besets the stage with sweet nonsense. His songs are written from various perspectives about different people in a variety of situations and emotions and the result is a touching sonic kaleidoscope.
