The Design Afrika product range is an amalgamation of traditional and contemporary. Binky Newman has developed and designed the contemporary pieces which have resulted in a unique and fresh collection, which can be functional or sculptural.
Design Afrika was established by Binky Newman after 15 years of being involved in various aspects of African Craft. It was in 1995 that Binky left the Okavango Delta, taking with her the intricately woven baskets of the Hambukushu Women. These became the first products in the Design Afrika Collection of finely made handwork.
Fine art and craft from throughout Africa are produced and developed, focussing on products made by highly skilled craftspeople. Very often this means traveling to remote areas in the hope of finding a basket that was previously thought to be extinct.
Binky and her team at Design Afrika strive to nurture the creative and entrepreneurial initiative of rural communities by encouraging the production of these high quality products and contemporary trends and fashions thereby ensuring that their designs establish an intrinsic worth and importance in the design world.
By promoting well-made, reasonably priced, functional and artistic craft, Design Afrika aims to contribute to the emergence of Africa as a source of inspiration and spiritual strength.
